 2017 Preview 


       Sumiton Christian completed the 2016 season with a 9-3 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region seven, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Sumiton Christian reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Pickens County by a score of 56-21.

       The Eagles improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2011. The Eagles won as many games as in any season since 2000. It marked the first time since the 2011 season that the Eagles qualified for the playoffs. The Eagles hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach McCarty saw improvement as they won nine games following a 3-7 record in 2015.

       The high-scoring Sumiton Christian offense ranked 23rd in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.8 points a game.

       Since 2010, Sumiton Christian has gone a combined 32-39. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 1A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 24 seasons, Sumiton Christian has managed to compile a record of 113-130. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 1A and 238th in the AHSAA.

Bart Lockhart leaves Sumiton Christian after two seasons with a 12-10 record. He moves to Dora where he will assume the head football coaching duties.


Mike McCarty is the new Sumiton Christian football coach. He was also an All-State receiver for the school in 2000.



       The Sumiton Christian Eagles will play in Class 1A region seven during the 2017 season.

       The Eagles will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region seven this season.

      Senior Tanner Talley returns after rushing for 1,716 yards on 207 carries and scoring 22 touchdowns. He also got in on 75 tackles on defense.

       The Eagles open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Victory Christian on Friday, August 25 at David Campbell Field. Last year the Victory Christian Lions finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 1A region four. The Lions ended last season on a positive note with a win over Vincent by a score of 53-39 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Sumiton Christian and Victory Christian have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 3-3-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2016 with Sumiton Christian winning by a score of 55-28.
